If you have ever decided you want to start making all your family’s bread you know what a large task it can be. I was terrible at it when I first tried so I knew if I was going to try and switch our family over I first needed to produce something edible. That’s when I decided on the bread machine and have never looked back. It makes it SO easy to make anything you find in the bakery section of the grocery store. Sandwich breads, sweet breads, quick breads, white breads, wheat breads, sourdough, rye, bagels, english muffins, doughnuts, ciabatta, naan, pita, focaccia, pizza crust, sticky buns/ cinnamon rolls, pretzels, hamburger and hot dog buns, etc. can all be made using the bread machine. It can be a very valuable tool for any homestead.

hey there friends frugal green girl again and you know several you know about a year and a half ago I decided I really wanted to start making some bread homemade and long story short I was a terrible horrible miserable failure at it I mean it was terrible so anyway we ended up going back to the grocery store bread and I really wanted to make some homemade breads because there were so many ingredients in the honey in the grocery store breads that I was trying to avoid you know like corn syrup and all this other stuff and so you know and I wanted to use organic flowers and the organic breads were so expensive sorry my cat is scratching his neck jinke called anyway so I ended up buying a bread machine because I really wanted to make some homemade bread with homemade you know some really quality ingredients but since I was so bad at it I needed something and in the end now that I've been using this thing basically to make all of the bread that our family uses for almost a year and a half now I'm probably almost exactly a year and a half now I've been really happy with it and it's a really easy way to get the homemade bread without all of the work involved and this thing is actually helped teach me how to make bread because the mistakes that I was making this showed me what those mistakes were and I was able to you know work out the bugs and show me exactly how long you're supposed to knead it and how long it's supposed to rise for and all those little things that I really didn't know and understand at the time so now you know when I want to make bread the quick and easy way I can or if I want to try and make it homemade then I can do that too and I'm a little bit better at it so anyway this is my bread machine it's a West Bend it has a horizontal loaf pan that means the bread pan is more like a traditional style loaf pan that'll make a more traditional style loaf of bread loaf unlike maybe some of the other bread machines that have like a square bread pan you know they make bread that's real tall and square like this one will actually make a loaf of bread that's a lot more like what you see at the grocery store and so I highly recommend this if you don't have a bread machine and you know you're in the maybe the same position I was in you want to make it homemade but maybe you don't have time or whatnot this thing is a huge time stealer the other thing is the horizontal loaf pans have two paddles which actually helps a lot as well it really helps to knead the bread and it really makes a really nice loaf of bread and so to go with my bread machine I have a bread machine book it's called 250 best American bread machine baking recipes it's by Donna Washburn and Heather but I think they have three versions of this I'll put a link down below but I'm pretty sure it's they have a hundred and fifty 250 and then 300 I got this one with the 250 and you know I know there's a lot of different bread machines out there I'm not necessarily saying this is the only one to get or whatever there's other ones you know this is ooh Russia or whatever and those are have the horizontal loaf pan as well but they're a lot more expensive so I feel like you know this one has the high quality features at a lower quality price that's why I picked to this one and I've been really happy with it haven't had any problems with it over the year and a half I've used it and I like this bread book because it really has a lot of good recipes in addition to being able to make just regular slicing style bread like wheat breads rye breads you know seed breads you know whole grain just all these different white breads if you really wanted to all these different types of breads that you can make the or just made it right in the bread pan you can make all kinds of other breads using this bread machine it'll make the dough and then you can use that dough to make other stuff and this book has like everything anything you would find in the bakery section pretty much has a recipe for it donuts bagels of all types of flavors you know cinnamon rolls you know English muffins I mean seriously I could go on and on hot dog and hamburger buns all these are the things we can stop buying from the grocery store and start making with our own you know organic ingredients or whatever it is or say you wanted to you know or if you have a gluten-free diet they also have a book for gluten free recipes so you can make your own gluten free breads without having to use those expensive grocery store ones but whatever it is or if you're trying to get away from GMOs and trying to eat you know real healthy you know natural stuff you know you can you could decide what you want to put in your breads when you making your own bread and since there are several books out there with different recipes that are designed for bread machines you know you can really get good results with one of these and even like I was mentioning earlier with all the different types of recipes there are you can actually just eliminate all the stuff that you would buy from the grocery store that's bread like and start making it all yourself and it's actually really easy to do so I'm gonna go ahead and make a loaf of bread with you right now and I'm gonna intentionally make some mistakes with it so that you can see you know what bread is supposed to look like if it's too moist if it's too dry if it's been too much yeast added and stuff like that I'm gonna do these things on purpose so that you can know you know what to adjust in the recipe so that you can get the perfect loaf of bread every time so let's go ahead and make some it'll be like a regular whole-wheat bread or something okay so I did go ahead and choose just a fairly regular wheat bread I thought that would work best for the demonstration it does have a little bit of flaxseed in it but that's okay for the most part it's just a week maybe and flaxseed bread and I've left out some of the water actually quite a bit of it and some of the flour to sort of show you you know what it would look like if it's too moist and if it's too wet as far as how this stuff actually goes into the bread machine pan um basically the water goes in first then like the oil and the other ingredients that are like it you know salt sugar things like that all that stuff goes in next um you know dry milk if you're using it and then comes the flours and then last of all comes any seeds or whole grains you're using I will excuse me then last hit was the yeast so I guess that's not the seeds don't come last the yeast but anyway if you're going to be using say like you're making a sweet bread or something and it has like cranberries or raisins in it you're not going to want to add those right now you're gonna want to wait for the bread machine to go ahead and mix it up and knead it and then on its second need cycle halfway through it that's when you add it otherwise you'll break all the little pieces of fruit up and whatnot so you know follow the recipe on that if it says to add it at the add signal most bread machines beep when it's tone time to add that stuff it'll tell you when it when it actually needs done so there it all is all measured in there choose the correct cycle I'm gonna use a whole wheat cycle I like to use a low light setting so it doesn't get too dark and then 2 pounds get it started now I know what you're thinking you may be thinking something like well if I follow the recipe I'm not gonna really have any problems with it being too moisture to dry but the problem is different flours have different moisture contents so even if we think you know if you follow the recipe it'll worked out you know it'll work fine for one recipe but then a really dry flour you might need extra water or a really moist flour that's been kept in an area with a lot of moisture you know then you're gonna end up having some issues with it there maybe need to add more flour for that so as you see you see it's not really forming into a ball it's just kind of making all these small balls it kind of sounds you know it kind of has a sandy sound as it's going around in there this is definitely way too dry this would definitely not make a very good boyfriend so I'm gonna go ahead and add the rest of this water so will hopefully make it too moist I'll go ahead and let it need and then I'll show you what that looks like in a few seconds okay so now I've added the water and as you'll see you see how it kind of sticks to the bottom of the pan you can see that I hope you can that means there's too much water this doesn't look like it's way too much water because it is forming into a ball but at the same time it's not supposed to make those little indents to where it's sticking really bad to the sides and the bottom of the dam so I'm going to go ahead and add the extra flour we'll show you what it's supposed to look like but I did forget to mention when you use a bread machine make sure you use bread machine piece this is actually really really important because your breads won't turn out unless you use bread machine piece so yeah here let me add the flour and I'll show you what it's supposed to look like okay so I went ahead and added the flour little by little until I feel like I've gotten the right consistency and as you can see there is a little bit of flour still sticking to the sides of the pan which is okay that's not a problem at all but the bread itself instead of being into two balls is booming into one dough ball as it's being needed right now and the other thing is is it's not really sticking to the bottom of the pan like it was before so and when you touch it you know it feels a little sticky but it doesn't really stick to your fingers they may be just a little bit but it's not really that sticky this is the consistency you're looking for if it's too dry the bread won't form into a by an actual loaf if you make it too moist when you go to slice the bread it'll just crumble so you want the right consistency so I can turn out you know as best as I can so let me go ahead and finish this up the bread machine is really good in that once I get the thing the way it's supposed to be I just shut the lid and walk away it's gonna need it let it rise it's gonna need it again then it'll proof it that's a second rise and then it'll bake it right on the same thing and I don't even have to watch the time or anything it's so convenient is it really works out for our busy family's lifestyle so yep I'll just go ahead and check back with you in about three hours at 19 minutes when it finishes okay so here it is all finished the bread I tried to add too much yeast on purpose to kind of show you what it looks like when those bread falls and it really didn't fall that bad this time actually but basically instead of having that nice rounded top to it if the bread sinks kind of in the middle and it's like con Cave instead of being convex that means that the too much yeast has been added and you know even when you follow the recipe sometimes you know the recipe may call for too much yeast and that's because the recipes are usually formulated for a bread that's being made at sea level and the higher up in elevation you go the lower the air pressure is the better the yeast works let me say it another way basically if you live it an area where I am like say 4,000 feet above sea level you might want to back off the yeast a little bit from the recipe otherwise you might end up with bread that rises too much and then falls in the center which isn't really that big of a deal it still tastes really good the bread is still – absolutely edible instead of calling it a failed loaf of bread you know I call it a kitty face sandwich my youngest daughter loves cats and so kitty everything is like her thing so when I make sandwiches and it's kind of like that that fallen bread kind of shape it kind of looks like a cat face so yeah we just make it into a fun thing rather than calling it a failed loaf of bread but yeah so if you live at sea-level you may even need to add a little bit extra yeast it really depends on where the recipes were formulated from so that's just something to keep in mind and you know I just make notes in my book like I'll test it and if I feel like there's a little too much yeast I'll go ahead and just back off of it you know and write how much I have used until I get the right formula so but this one didn't quite you know sink as much as I don't know I guess I was hoping to but that's okay because whenever it actually still turns out pretty well so get a nice sharp knife when I cut into this oh I forgot to mention really fast one of the negative things about using a bread machine is that you do get little holes in the bottom of the bread I really don't find that too big of a deal it's still fine but it makes really good luck bread my bread machine has a a feature where you can actually set it to delay so say you wanted to put all the ingredients into it and then leave for the day go out skiing or whatever and then you can come home to a nice crock-pot full of soup and some nice you know homemade bread so I'm really feeling to the the bread machine very useful it's really helped us to switch from you know breads that were less healthy to ones with real good pure ingredients and all the stuff he wanted and none of the stuff we don't and I really do think it makes a really nice you know high quality style bread so I hope you found this video helpful and we'll
